#28 Cannon skinning with Rippers North on Super Bowl Sunday

Sunday, 2/5/17, 9:59AM

What a day! I met my Ripper friends to skin up Cannon, then hurried home to watch the Super Bowl. There were some eerie similarities.
Cannon: 1h08m of uphill suffering followed by 17m of downhill exhilaration.
Super Bowl: 56m of blowout depression followed by 8m of comeback amazement.

Stats:

  • Peaks: Cannon
  • Weather: cold and windy. ~10F and 25mph
  • Parked: Cannon Ski Resort
  • Trails: skinned up Ravine, the official uphill route; skied down whatever the Rippers chose
  • Time: 2h27m
  • Distance: 3.8mi
  • Track: GaiaGps

An overview of my Single Season Winter 48 with links to all the trip reports is here.

Rippers North Assemble!

JD, Jared, and Joe took the lift while Bill, Rich, Jay, Tom, and I skinned up. They later claimed to get in about 7 runs before they met us at the tram  top for a Stone Ripper toast. I was skeptical given that we got up in 1h08m. However, the Peabody Express and the Cannonball Quad are each about a 5-minute ride, so... if they skied down in less than 5 minutes and spent 0 time in line, they could conceivably get in 7 runs in 68 minutes.

Bill shot ahead and shot these photos.

Of course, Rich was the first one up the mountain; doesn't matter if it's skis or bikes.

Jay telemarking downhill is a thing of beauty. So fast. Such carved turns. Wow!

Tom kept telling us not to wait for him. Who was waiting? We were all gassed.
Downhill Tom led the whole way. Jay says he learned all he knows about telemarking from Tom.

Some crazy man on the mountain.

Bill scouted the route up a couple of weeks ago. Claimed he nearly passed out after going up the steep Taft Slalom to the summit. He had plenty of time to rest waiting for us this time, so he was all smiles.

Rich and Jay.

More smiles from Bill.

Mr Technique.

I hiked the  extra 100 yards to summit tower, while the rest of the crew met in the tram top restaurant.

The view from the summit across Franconia Notch to Mt Lafayette.

What is this snow covered ridge to the north? Waumbeck? Cabot?

Southeast from the summit. I guess the pointy peak is Mt Liberty.

Yes. I got sweaty on the way up.

Rippers toasting a fun day on the mountain with Stone Ripper IPA.

Rob's Super Bowl front five.
Hey. Look at that! Rob and I have the same Corian countertops in our kitchens.

Josh is ready, too

My Super Bowl lineup.
I drank the Heady Topper in the first quarter while it was still 0-0, but was depressed through most of the game and couldn't move from the sofa, so that was it. I did manage to celebrate with the Trillium after the game, but the Greyhound IPA will have to wait for another day.

Rob one-ups us with his home smoked ribs and Tree House tulip glass.
Yes, these are the kinds of photos that beer nerds send each other.

Tom looks as overwhelmed by the record-setting comeback as Julie and I were. Still can't quite believe it the next morning.
